Bad Ischl and the Salzkammergut – historical to the present day

In 1656, the region around Ischl was first referred to as the "Salzkammergut," emphasizing that salt mining was of great economic value to the Habsburgs. For centuries, the salt trade shaped the areas surrounding the Ischl saltworks and ensured lasting prosperity.

It wasn't until the 18th century that the scenic spa town slowly began to attract the attention of the monarchy and became a magnet for wealthy travelers. It flourished as a spa town in the 19th century.

In the 1820s, doctors established Bad Ischl as a health resort, recommending salt baths and mild mountain air to guests. Archduchess Sophie's spa success, known as "Salt Princes," soon turned the town into a social hotspot for the monarchy. Magnificent hotels, country houses, and spa facilities were built to meet the demands of wealthy visitors.

From 1849 to 1914, Emperor Franz Joseph I used Bad Ischl as his summer residence, and in 1853 he became engaged to Elisabeth (“Sisi”) in what is now the museum villa.

In 1906 the place was officially given the additional name “Bad”, and in 1940 it was elevated to town status.

Today, Bad Ischl has 14,107 inhabitants and presents itself as a vibrant center of the Salzkammergut region. In the Entente Florale Europe quality of life competition, the town won a gold medal, achieving the highest rating ever awarded. In 2024, Bad Ischl, along with 22 other Salzkammergut municipalities, was named European Capital of Culture, thus cementing its historical and cultural significance far beyond Austria's borders.
